Why did James Bond like his Martinis Shaken and not stirred?

Bond always wants his Martinis the Vesper shaken and not stirred. This was actually a topic of interest for scientists and has an interesting answer. In 1999, researchers at the University of Western Ontario investigated the antioxidant properties in a martini and how these properties are affected by how the the martini was prepared.

Antioxidants help protect against tissue damage that can leads to heart disease and cataracts. A martini has the ability to deactivate hydrogen peroxide. Detailed chemistry aside, a shaken martini was about twice as effective at deactivating hydrogen peroxide as opposed to being stirred.

So, the next time you make a James Bond Martini, remember to shake it and not stir it. We all know how healthy James Bond is and now we have a scientific reason why.
