How to fix the red lights of death on the XBox 360

A friend of mine had the RLOD on his Xbox and he simply cleaned the connectors for the hard drive and on the unit itself. The 360 then worked after that, but it didn’t work for long as it died again about two weeks later…
This method also worked for the white screen “Please insert this disc into a xbox 360″ on my xbox for about a year
